Introduction: This is a case study of activists’ learning in a campaign that prevented metropolitan waste being transferred to the Hunter Valley. The paper begins by describing the campaign and the activists’ learning in it. Subsequent sections elucidate the reasons for the activists’ success, examine their learning in greater detail, explain why women led the campaign, consider the broader political and educational significance of the activists’ experience, and the alignment of this local activism with social action elsewhere. The paper concludes by reflecting on methodological issues raised by the study.
